Jai Lava Kusa Box Office collections : Sets a record

Jai Lava Kusa has been received well by the audience, and the filmmakers are happy about the response. Critics are impressed by Jr NTR’s act as he portrayed three contrasting roles – Jai, Lava and Kusa – in the film. So far, the collections indicate that this Telugu film is off to a great start not just in Telugu states, but also cities like Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai. Though the complete collection is yet to be revealed, here is everything that we know so far. Even though the film released on a weekday, the film has minted money at the box office. It is also being claimed that the movie is second only to Baahubali in terms of collection. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala had tweeted, “Outside Telugu States, #JaiLavaKusa has opened well in #Chennai, #Bengaluru and #Mumbai yesterday.” He has shared that the film’s day 1 collection in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana stands at a gross of Rs 32.1 crores. He also shared the worldwide gross collection to be Rs 47.25 crore. The collection in USA also is great as the film registered a collection of $ 552,334 (Rs 3.58 crore). Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “A midweek release [Wed], yet Telugu film #JaiLavaKusa takes THUNDEROUS start in USA. Total till 4.35 pm IST: $ 552,334 [Rs 3.58 cr]. @Rentrak.” Reports also suggest that the film has performed well in UAE. The final number is awaited from the filmmakers as of now.

Simran Box Office Collection

After a couple of disappointing Fridays, a lot of expectations have been riding on Kangana Ranaut's latest movie, Simran. However, the usual trend is that Fridays go slow, and the weekends bring in the rush. The same is likely to be the case with Simran. Taran Adarsh tweeted that Hansal Mehta's latest movie made a slow start with Rs 2.77 crore on Friday. Simran, directed by Hansal Mehta, who has given some great movies such as Aligarh, Shahid and City Lights, has received mixed response from critics. While everyone has been praising Kangana's terrific performance, they have also mentioned how the movie falls apart in the second half. He also took to Twitter to post his one-word review and his rating. However, Bollywood movies are proof that the movie need not be a spectacular work of art to be a hit. Similarly, it is all too soon to predict the fate of Mehta's Simran. Kangana's latest movie revolves around the life of Simran, a Gujarati girl who lives in Atlanta, USA, and whose ambitions drag her into a life of crime. The movie is inspired by the real-life story of Sandeep Kaur, who is currently serving a sentence of 66 months in a Federal prison.

Box Office Collection: Another disappointing weekend for Bollywood

On September 8, the Deol-brothers starrer, Poster Boys, released with Arjun Rampal's Arun Gawli biopic, Daddy. Both the movies did not perform well on its opening day, marking yet another disappointing weekend for Bollywood. On the second day, both the movies saw significant growth in terms of numbers. However, Poster Boys, only managed to make Rs 2.40 crore while Daddy collected Rs 2 crore. Though both the films started on a slow note, Poster Boys performed better on the second day. Shreyas Talpade's directorial debut in Bollywood managed to stay a little ahead of Daddy by earning Rs 4.15 crore in two days. The movie, starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Shreyas Talpade, earned Rs 1.75 crore on its first day while Daddy collected Rs 1.25 crore. After the second day, Daddy's collection roughly closed at Rs 4 crore. Poster Boys is a remake of Marathi film Poshter Boyz. The story is a hilarious take on how the lives of three men - Jagaavar Chaudhry (Sunny), Vinay Sharma (Bobby) and Arjun Singh (Shreyas) - take an unpleasant turn after they accidentally feature on a vasectomy advertisement. Daddy, on the other hand, is the life story of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, who started out as a milkman in Mumbai but eventually became the 'daddy' of the underworld. Arjun Rampal's portrayal of Arun Gawli has earned him great appreciation from the audience. Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, Daddy also stars Aishwarya Rajesh and Farhan Akhtar in important roles.

It is difficult for a low-budget film to be a hit, people don’t discuss them, says Nawazuddin Siddiqui

It is difficult for a low-budget film to be a hit, people don’t discuss them, says Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is not very social media friendly. While actors have always made sure to stay in touch with their followers and fans over social media, Nawaz has strictly stuck to promoting his films or raising some serious issues. After starting a conversation around racism within the industry, Nawazuddin’s tweet on his recent release, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz’s budget has made everyone curious that what made him write about it. Nawaz said, “I tweeted though I did not want to, but people have been talking about the budget of my film. Naturally, a film is a flop or hit in terms of the budget it is made on. But a few in the industry, who claim to know everything about the film, have shared wrong information and declared the film a flop. It is important to put the budget and facts in front. I thought the truth should come out.” But does a budget affect a film’s success or failure to such an extent? “It is a small film with a tight budget. I signed this film in 2013, but it didn’t work out. We worked again and the heroine left. Now we did it again with all new actors. But because budget comes in the picture, the importance shifts from team’s passion to how much it manages to earn. I as an actor do not get affected with the budget or anything but the efforts of the entire team should not go wasted and hence, I thought we should speak about it.” The actor agrees that budget of a film and the star power are two things which drive the film and the audience’s decision to watch it. He says that people very comfortably declare a small budgeted film a flop while a big banner or good star cast film is called a hit without realising the cost of each film. Referring to his 2017 release Haraamkhor, Nawaz said, “The film was made with Rs 70 lakhs. We sold the rights to Netflix for Rs 1 crore. So, how is the film flop from any angle? However, when a big star cast film earns even 70 crores, it is declared a hit. Arre yaar, the budget of the film is beyond Rs 100 crores, on what basis are you calling the film a hit? You know what is the problem? The problem is that these people who talk about box office figures, who declare a film hit or flop, do not even care about small films.” “I do all sort of films, high or low budget. A film does not flop because of bad content, it flops because budget farak padta hai. It is hard for a low budget films to be declared a hit. It works well but people don’t talk about it. 3 crore ki film 16 crore kamale toh hit nahi hai par 100 crores ki film 70 kamale toh hit hai, yeh kaha ka hisaab hua,” continued Nawaz. The actor is experiencing a phase where his films with solo leads are also working well at the box office. Talking about the same, Nawaz quipped, “I am happy. Such films work because there is content and performance too. People have become advanced and since they watch global films, they are understanding the importance of content. The audience has started looking for rich content but we demoralise small filmmakers so much that they lose out hope even before the film reaches audience. If you look at the trends, people are loving different things that are being offered to them. We have to offer them new scripts and new concepts. We should improve as an industry.”

Its Akshay Kumar’s fifth century in 20 months as Toilet Ek Prem Katha does well in Box office

Akshay Kumar has aced the formula to make hit films, if there is a formula. With Toilet Ek Prem Katha, a socially relevant film that takes on the problem of open defecation in India, the actor has posted his fifth consecutive hit in the last 20 months. According to early estimates, Toilet movie managed to earn over Rs 100 crore in eight days after its release. The film came out on August 11. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted, “#ToiletEkPremKatha All-India BO Nett: 1st Week - Rs. 96.05 cr. Fri Aug 18th - Rs. 4.25 cr. (Early Estimates) Total - Rs. 100.30 cr.” Before Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Akshay Kumar’s Airlift, Housefull 3, Rustom and Jolly LLB 2 made over Rs 100 crore and posted profits as they were all made at a comparatively modest budget.
Toilet has got a lot of applause for its out-of-the-box theme and treatment. Inspired by PM Narendra Modi’s Clean India campaign, it has also gone tax-free in certain places. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh had earlier said that the film’s succesful run is far from over. “#ToiletEkPremKatha Fri 13.10 cr, Sat 17.10 cr, Sun 21.25 cr, Mon 12 cr, Tue 20 cr, Wed 6.50 cr, Thu 6.10 cr. Total: Rs. 96.05 cr. #ToiletEkPremKatha is expected to dominate in Week 2, despite new film releases today... It’s a wave that won’t slow down so soon... #TEPK.” Ayushmann Khurrana, Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon’s Barielly Ki Barfi released this week as did Gurinder Chaddha’s Viceroy’s House. Meanwhile, Akshay spoke about the film’s success and reasons behind at a recent press conference. “I never make a social film with lot of commercial material; I make sure that there is a love story. To be honest I remember the love story more than anything else in this (Toilet: Ek Prem Katha) film,” he said. Akshay is now being called Bharat Kumar like Manoj Kumar in the 1970s. Asked about this, he said: “I think he is a very big man and the films that he made cannot be compared to any others.” Asked if there are any free screenings of the film taking place in the country, he said: “Many places the government themselves are showing it... I have heard they are doing it currently in Haryana. Many villages in UP are screening the film. I just heard that even Doordarshan wants to show the film very soon so that maximum people can watch it as soon as possible.”

Deepika Padukone is no longer in Forbes’ list of highest paid actresses. Emma Stone Tops the list

Forbes has released this year's list of the world's 10 highest paid actresses and homegirl Deepika Padukone, ranked #10 in 2016, has not made the cut this time. As Forbes put it: "The list examined actresses the world over, but no stars from Asia made the cut, as Fan Bingbing and Deepika Padukone dropped off due to quieter years." Deepika's starring role in xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage - also her Hollywood debut - contributed hugely to her earnings of $10 million last year. She has no international project currently and is working on one film at home - the period drama Padmavati, co-starring Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor. Also absent from Forbes' 2017 list is Scarlett Johansson - this is the first time in three years that she hasn't made the grade. So who is on the list? Emma Stone, Oscar-winner for La La Land, is #1 for the first time, with Forbes reporting earnings of $26 million. Jennifer Lawrence, who topped the list two years in a row, has slipped to third place, behind Jennifer Aniston. The Jennifers are at $25.5 and $24 million respectively - JLaw made just half of her 2016 total. The top three on the list of 10 are the only actresses to have made over $20 million. They are followed by Melissa McCarthy, Mila Kunis, Emma Watson, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts and Amy Adams. Forbes reports a 16% drop in the cumulative earnings of the world's top actresses - $172.5 million this year, down from $205 million in 2016. Forbes also notes that half the actresses on the list are over 40 - Jennifer Aniston, Melissa McCarthy, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts and Amy Adams - a significant achievement given the scarcity of roles for women their age. Forbes also flags another ugly truth - only 28.7% of speaking roles in films are filled by women. Awaited, the list of the 10 highest paid TV actresses on which Priyanka Chopra might find a place, as she did last year. Here is the full list of the world's highest paid actresses and earnings as ranked by Forbes: 1. Emma Stone - $26 million 2. Jennifer Aniston - $25.5 million 3. Jennifer Lawrence - $24 million 4. Melissa McCarthy - $18 million 5. Mila Kunis - $15.5 million 6. Emma Watson - $14 million 7. Charlize Theron - $14 million 8. Cate Blanchett, - $12 million 9. Julia Roberts - $12 million 10. Amy Adams - $11.5 million
