Principal sessions court in Ernakulam sentenced Assamese native and migrant labourer Ameerul Islam to death on Thursday for the brutal murder and rape of dalit law student Jisha of Perumbavoor.

The court has also awarded rigorous imprisonment for seven years and a fine of 15, 000 for crime committed under section 449 IPC , RI for 1 year for crime under section 342, RI for 10 years and 25, 000 fine for rape and life imprisonment for causing death following rape, as well. The accused was ordered to be hanged by neck till he is dead for murder.

The court which convicted Ameerul Islam on Tuesday, heard both sides on Wednesday ahead of deciding on the quantum of punishment.

Ameerul kept a straight face as he listened to the sentence.

The prosecution had earlier sought maximum punishment for Ameerul, terming Jisha murder case as rarest of rare. “The 25 cm long knife was inserted into her private parts causing fatal injuries to internal organs. The barbaric act is similar to the Nirbhaya case. Her vagina being mutilated in itself shows the perversion of the convict. It is only natural that the judicial conscience be satisfied with capital punishment being awarded to the accused Ameerul Islam,” advocate NK Unnikrishnan, the special public prosecutor had said.

In the sensational case, the special investigation team was headed by ADGP B Sandhya with SP S Sasidharan as principal investigating officer.
